“Before John, I had a few coaches that always make me jump to speed base first and teaching your body to run and feel comfortable during running became second. John Henwood not only became my coach, he became my running psychologist, my nutrition adviser, my stretcher, my weight trainer, my running partner for about 200 meters before he took off and my friend.

John has trained me for 18 months now. I ran Disney World Marathon in January 2007 in 4 hours and 2 minutes without John. This year I ran New York City Marathon finishing in 3 hours and 32 minutes and at the same time qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2009.

John doesn’t only train people, he makes you believe that if you believe in yourself everything can be possible. He has made me get all my best times in local races and I’m getting better. He has made me confident during my training and during my races. He makes me very disciplined and teaches me to never give up. I recommend John 100%.”

“I found John a year ago on the NYRR website. NYC was my first marathon. John was able to coach me through countless injuries and setbacks over the past year.

Whether its his stretching, teaching of patience, endurance, or just very simply his expertise coaching and running plans–he gave me the tools and confidence I needed to achieve my goal successfully with the limitations I had.

I finished with a 4:17 marathon time. It truly was one of the best day’s of my life, Coach Henwood helped make it all possible.”

“I QUALIFIED FOR BOSTON!! I’ve been a member of the New York Road Runners since 2000. I’ve run 3 marathons using training programs from running books. My best finishing time was 4h17.

John’s training program is very different from what I’ve done before and that really seemed to make all the difference, in spite of the fact that I started training quite late this year. My goal was to run the 2008 New York marathon in 3h50 to qualify for the Boston marathon. I finished in 3h45, blowing away my PR and even beating my goal time by 5 minutes!

John is a fantastic coach and a great person. He checked in with me frequently and adjusted my program depending on how I was doing. And having a mentor who competed in the Olympics really made me understand what it is like to commit to a goal you’ve set for yourself. An all-round awesome experience.”

“I made my marathon debut running 2:51:49 in the 2008 NYC ING Marathon.

I finished 11 seconds faster than John’s goal time for me and when running 26 miles, that is a pretty accurate prediction!

He trained me methodically and rigorously while still allowing leeway for my long work hours. I could not have trained or preformed the way I did without John’s guidance and support.”

“I started working with John only 8 weeks before the NYC marathon He created a program that vastly improved my fitness in a short period of time.

When we discussed my goals for the NYC marathon, he told me I could easily break 3:10 and qualify for Boston. Given I had run a 3:24 in London in April, I thought this was a bit of a stretch. However, not only did I run 3:08:30 (which was exactly 30 minutes faster than my NYC time last year), but I also ran the first half of the race in under 1:33, which was by far my fastest half marathon time.

The training program John gave me was very manageable, and I found his speed sessions very motivating. Also, I had only a few aches and pains that John was able to help me easily get rid of through his hands-on stretching, cross-training.

I’m looking forward to running Boston, and I’m confident John will help me reach new goals that I would not have thought were remotely possible when I started running two years ago.”
